My statement on the Auditor General Report on Special Education .

The recent Office of the Auditor General of Ontario Special Education report has revealed significant challenges within the current education system, emphasizing the urgent need for School Boards to prioritize Special Education. The report also urges the Province to increase investment in Special Education to better support the diverse needs of students across Ontario.

School Boards must uphold the rights of students with identified needs in mainstream classrooms by providing appropriate supports, accommodations, and equitable access to education. Addressing each student’s individual needs is crucial for improving outcomes and strengthening the education system for all learners.

Concerns about gaps in Special Education services have been consistently raised by parents, students, and grassroots organizations, and these issues are now formally recognized at the provincial level. The next critical step is implementation: recommendations must be translated into meaningful action through sustained commitment and accountability from both the Province and School Boards.

We appreciate the government’s acknowledgment of these ongoing concerns, especially the attention given by Minister of Education Paul Calandra. Continued action is needed to enhance supports for students and families.

We strongly advocate for the following improvements:
- Expansion of MEDD (Multiple Exceptionalities Developmental Delay) classes across schools
- Improved access to Special Education services, including psychology and assessment supports, with reduced wait times
- Increased Educational Assistant (EA) support in both MEDD classrooms and mainstream settings
- Recruitment and retention of more qualified teachers to address staffing shortages
- Enhanced and more reliable student transportation and busing services

These changes are essential to ensure that every student receives the support, inclusion, and opportunities required to succeed.
